How We Research

Written by Yuki, editor of Japan Travel Notes, an independent Japan travel guide based in Osaka. This page explains how the guides on this site are put together, so you can decide how much to trust them.

We are an independent guide, not an agency

Japan Travel Notes does not sell tours, rooms or passes, and no company pays to be recommended. Prices and conditions in the articles are taken from the official site of each attraction, operator and booking platform, and we link to that site so you can check the current figure yourself.

We compare 12 booking platforms, and say what each is for

Rather than sending every reader to one site, we keep a short list of hotel, tour, eSIM and transport platforms and note what each one is best at. The list, with the reasoning, is on Plan Your Trip: tools we use.

Prices are ranges, checked in yen

Hotel, tour and rail prices in Japan change with the season and the exchange rate. We quote ranges rather than single numbers, in yen, and we send you to the official page for anything that changes often (the Japan Rail Pass price is the clearest example: it is never stated in our articles).

Every article shows when it was checked

The disclosure line at the top of each article carries the date the prices and conditions were last verified. If the date is old, treat the numbers as history and check the official site.

Advertising disclosure

Some links go to booking platforms with affiliate programmes. If you book through one, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you, and the link is marked as sponsored. We have no paid partnerships at the moment, so no link on this site earns us anything today. Full text: Affiliate disclosure.

Corrections

If a price, opening hour or rule in an article is wrong, tell us via the contact page and we will fix it and note the change.
